How I Spent 3 Days in London

I recently visited London and was amazed at the number of things to do. Frankly, I could stay there for months and not run out of things to see and do; however, I know most do not have that kind of time, so here is an itinerary for those spending just a few days in London, the vibrant capital of the United Kingdom. And yes, these pictures are from my trip.

Day 1: Historical Highlights and Iconic Landmarks

Morning: The Tower of London and Tower Bridge

  • Start your journey at the Tower of London, a historic fortress and former prison that's home to the dazzling Crown Jewels. I highly recommend a “skip the line” guided tour led by the Yeoman Warders (or "Beefeaters") to dive deep into the castle's intriguing history and avoid the sometimes incredibly long lines.
  • Afterward, stroll over to Tower Bridge. Its glass-floored walkway offers breathtaking views of the River Thames and the city skyline. There is something very satisfying about walking up the stairs and crossing on foot across the top of the bridge.

Lunch: Borough Market

  • Head to Borough Market, one of London's oldest and most renowned food markets. Enjoy a variety of dishes, from traditional British fish and chips to global street food. Try the scotch eggs or grab a fresh meat pie for an authentic taste of Britain. It’s like permanent food trucks with cuisine to fit any taste.

Afternoon: Westminster Abbey and Big Ben

  • Make your way to Westminster Abbey, the stunning Gothic church where British monarchs have been crowned for centuries. It's also the final resting place of notable figures like Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.
  • Snap a photo of the iconic Big Ben and Houses of Parliament, just a short walk from the abbey.

Evening: The London Eye

  • End your day with a ride on the London Eye, one of the world’s largest observation wheels. The panoramic views of the city at sunset are unforgettable.

Dinner: Rules Restaurant

  • Dine at Rules, London’s oldest restaurant, specializing in classic British cuisine. Their hearty steak and kidney pie or roast lamb is perfect for a traditional British dinner experience.

Day 2: Culture and Modern London

Morning: The British Museum

  • Begin your day at the British Museum, home to world-famous artifacts like the Rosetta Stone and the Elgin Marbles. Which reminds me of my favorite joke. “Why are the pyramids in Egypt? Answer: Because the British couldn’t figure out a way to put them on a ship.” Admission is free, making it an excellent cultural stop.

Lunch: Dishoom

  • Enjoy a fusion of British and Indian culture at Dishoom, inspired by Mumbai's Irani cafés. Their black daal and bacon naan roll are crowd favorites.

Afternoon: Covent Garden and the West End

  • Wander through Covent Garden, a lively area filled with shops, street performers, and cozy cafés. Pick up unique souvenirs or simply enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.
  • If you love theater, grab tickets for a matinee show in London’s West End, the city’s famed theater district. It’s London’s Broadway.

Evening: The Shard and Southbank Stroll

  • Head to The Shard, Western Europe’s tallest building, for cocktails and dinner with a view at Aqua Shard.
  • Afterward, take a leisurely stroll along the Southbank, enjoying the riverside atmosphere, street performers, and lit-up landmarks.

Day 3: Royal London and Neighborhood Charm

Morning: Buckingham Palace and Changing of the Guard

  • Witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony (check the schedule as it doesn’t occur daily) at Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British monarch. Arrive early for the best views.

Lunch: The Goring Hotel

  • Treat yourself to a royal lunch at The Goring Hotel, a favorite of the royal family. Their elegant dining room offers refined British classics like Dover sole and Cornish lobster omelet.

Afternoon: Hyde Park and Kensington Palace

  • Stroll through Hyde Park, one of London’s most famous green spaces. Rent a paddle boat on the Serpentine or relax by the Diana Memorial Fountain.
  • Visit Kensington Palace, the residence of many royals, including Prince William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The palace features exhibitions on royal history and fashion.

Evening: Pub Culture in Soho

  • Experience London’s legendary pub culture at a historic establishment like The Dog and Duck or The Churchill Arms in Soho. Pair a pint of ale with classic pub fare, like bangers and mash or a hearty meat pie.

Optional Nightcap: Sky Garden

  • For your final night, head to the Sky Garden, a free observation deck with stunning city views. Enjoy a cocktail as you reflect on your whirlwind three days in London.

Final Tips for Your London Adventure

  • Transportation: Use an Oyster Card or contactless payment for easy access to the Tube and buses. I used my google wallet on my phone – it was very easy. Taxis and Ubers are also widely available.
  • Weather: London can be unpredictable, so pack layers and carry an umbrella.
  • Etiquette: Be mindful of queuing (standing in line) and remember to "stand on the right" when using escalators in Tube stations. Walkers go up or down on the left.

Three days in London offers a glimpse of the city’s grandeur, history, and culture. While it’s impossible to see everything, this itinerary will leave you with unforgettable memories and a longing to return for more.
