The Best of Europe for a Solo Traveler

Why Solo Travel?

I have traveled with my family, with my partner, and alone. Each of them offers advantages and disadvantages. However, solo travel is unique in that it provides the opportunity for a transformative experience that offers freedom, self-discovery, and the chance to connect with new cultures in ways that traveling with others might not. This is what the book and movie “Eat, Pray, Love” was all about. It allows you to move at your own pace, pursue your interests, and meet fellow travelers from all over the world. Whether you seek nature, history, or vibrant city life, Europe is full of opportunities for solo explorers. With excellent infrastructure, diverse destinations, and a traveler-friendly culture, it’s one of the best regions for those venturing out on their own.

Below are some of the best countries in Europe for solo travelers, each offering something unique—from outdoor adventures to rich history and affordable stays.

1. Iceland – Nature’s Playground for Adventurers

Iceland is an excellent destination for solo travelers, especially those who love the outdoors. With some of the world’s most stunning landscapes, including waterfalls, glaciers, geysers, and volcanoes, it’s ideal for hiking, photography, and adventure. I visited with the whole family, and everyone agreed it was the best vacation we ever took.

  • Why it’s great for solo travelers:
Iceland is one of the safest countries in the world, and it’s easy to navigate thanks to the popular Ring Road that circles the island. The welcoming local culture makes it easy to meet people on guided tours, especially ones to the Blue Lagoon, Reykjavik, or the Northern Lights.
  • Top experiences:
Explore Thingvellir National Park, hike the Fagradalsfjall volcano, and take a dip in natural hot springs. Again, you can easily join a group tour, meet new people, and make new friends.

2. Portugal – A Cultural Delight with Coastal Charm

Portugal combines vibrant cities with serene beaches, making it perfect for solo travelers. Whether you're exploring the tiled streets of Lisbon or lounging on the Algarve’s golden shores, Portugal offers a mix of activities and warm hospitality. I visited the Algarve as a solo traveler and enjoyed great meals and even toured a local vineyard complete with tastings. It’s easy to make new friends at a tasting! Everyone was quiet on the way to the vineyard, and very chatty on the way out!

  • Why it’s great for solo travelers:
Portugal is affordable, easy to get around, and friendly toward English-speaking tourists. Hostels and walking tours in Lisbon and Porto are great ways to meet fellow travelers.
  • Top experiences:
Walk through Alfama in Lisbon, visit the wineries in Douro Valley, and surf along the beaches of Ericeira or Lagos.

3. Finland – A Retreat for Relaxation and Natural Beauty

Finland offers an escape into tranquility, with its peaceful forests, lakes, and the magical experience of the midnight sun in summer or the Northern Lights in winter. It's perfect for solo travelers looking to unwind and reconnect with nature. My daughter recently visited Finland as a solo traveler and enjoyed it immensely.

The Finnish people are polite and respectful, allowing solo travelers to feel comfortable exploring independently. Finland’s efficient public transportation also makes it easy to get around.

Romania offers solo travelers a mix of medieval charm, fascinating folklore, and scenic landscapes. With affordable prices and a rich cultural heritage, it’s an intriguing destination off the beaten path.

  • Why it’s great for solo travelers:
Romania is still relatively under-touristed, meaning you can explore places like Brasov or Sibiu without crowds. Affordability makes it a great destination for budget-conscious solo travelers.
  • Top experiences:
Explore the mysterious Bran Castle (linked to Dracula legends), hike in the Carpathian Mountains, and wander through the picturesque streets of Sighisoara. Guided tours are a great way to see these treasures.

Albania offers beautiful coastlines, rugged mountains, and ancient ruins, but without the tourist crowds of neighboring countries. It’s an ideal place for adventurous solo travelers seeking authentic experiences.

Montenegro may be small, but it offers an impressive range of experiences, from picturesque coastlines to rugged mountain landscapes. It’s perfect for solo travelers looking for adventure in a compact setting. I loved Kotor on my visit; however, my daughter enjoyed rafting in the mountains.

The charming town of Kotor provides a relaxed atmosphere with stunning scenery, and it’s easy to make new friends while hiking or sailing along the Bay of Kotor.
  • Top experiences:
Hike the Ladder of Kotor (it’s a healthy climb up), take a boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks, and relax on the beaches of Budva.

8. Czech Republic – A Fairytale Experience with Modern Perks

The Czech Republic, known for its fairytale-like architecture and lively atmosphere, offers solo travelers both charm and convenience. Whether you're drawn to the history of Prague or the rolling hills of Moravia, there is something for everyone.
