7 Common Mistakes People Make When Traveling to Europe
Traveling to Europe is a dream for many, with its rich history, diverse cultures, and stunning landscapes. However, even the savviest travelers can fall prey to common mistakes that may hinder their experience. Here are seven pitfalls to avoid when planning your European adventure.
1. Overpacking
One of the most frequent mistakes travelers make is bringing too much luggage. Europe’s charming cobblestone streets and narrow staircases in historic buildings are not designed for oversized suitcases. Plus, many budget airlines have strict baggage restrictions, which can lead to extra fees. Pack light, bring versatile clothing, and remember that laundry facilities are often available. If you forget something, Europe has stores ya know. That hairbrush you picked up in Paris will always have special meaning.
2. Overplanning
While it’s tempting to squeeze as much as possible into your trip, overplanning can turn your vacation into a stressful race against time. A rigid itinerary leaves no room for spontaneity, such as lingering at a charming café or exploring a quaint street you stumble upon. Plan a few must-see activities but leave space for relaxation and unexpected discoveries. You don’t know what you don’t know, so leave time for the unforeseen.
3. Not Making Reservations or Buying Tickets for Popular Attractions
Europe’s iconic sites, like the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Vatican Museums in Rome, can sell out weeks or even months in advance. Arriving without tickets often means waiting in long lines or missing out altogether. Book tickets to major attractions and activities online well ahead of your trip to save time and disappointment.
4. Renting a Car
While renting a car seems like a convenient way to explore, it’s often more trouble than it’s worth. Parking can be expensive and hard to find in cities, toll roads can add unexpected costs, and local driving rules may be confusing. Europe’s extensive train and public transportation networks are reliable and often more economical, especially in urban areas or regions like Switzerland or Italy. Only rent cars if you have a specific reason, i.e. you are going to drive the ring road in Iceland or the Ring of Kerry in Ireland.
5. Using the Wrong Credit or Debit Card
Many travelers assume their credit or debit card will work seamlessly in Europe, only to face unexpected foreign transaction fees or cards that aren’t accepted. Look for cards with no foreign transaction fees and ensure your card is compatible with Europe’s widespread chip-and-PIN payment system. I tapped my phone all over Europe to pay for things from my card on my Google Wallet. It’s also wise to carry some local currency, as smaller shops or rural areas may not accept cards. Interestingly, the bus in Gibraltar only took coins or cash (British Pound or Euro).

6. Not Checking Cell Phone Coverage
Using your phone abroad without checking your carrier’s international coverage can lead to exorbitant roaming charges, or even worse, no coverage at all. This can be dangerous for your bank account and, frankly, even yourself, if you get lost where you shouldn’t be and cannot call or check Google maps.
Before you travel, contact your carrier to understand your options. Many providers offer affordable international plans, or you can purchase a local SIM card or eSIM for data and calls. Make sure your phone is unlocked if you plan to use a local SIM.
7. Only Visiting Tourist Hotspots
While landmarks like the Colosseum or Big Ben are undoubtedly worth seeing, don’t limit yourself to the typical tourist circuit. Some of Europe’s greatest charms lie in its lesser-known towns and countryside. Venture off the beaten path to discover hidden gems, experience authentic local culture, and avoid crowds. Small towns like Hallstatt in Austria or Lucca in Italy can offer a more intimate and memorable experience.
Final Thoughts
Traveling to Europe is an enriching experience, but a little foresight can save you from unnecessary stress. By avoiding these common mistakes, you can make the most of your trip, enjoy smoother travels, and immerse yourself fully in all that Europe has to offer. Bon voyage!
